ALL-STAR TEAM TO TACKLE HOUSING

Lachlan Leeming

Housing affordability will be the flagship issue for a star-studded line up vying to control the Central Coast Council.

Former Central Coast Mariners soccer coach Lawrie McKinna is heading the list of 15 candidates running in the Team Central Coast group contesting the local government elections, with the area to have elected representatives for the first time since the council was plunged into administration in 2020.

Also running for the group are ex-Socceroo captain Paul Wade and former federal MP and ultra-marathon runner Pat Farmer.

“The housing issue on the Central Coast is pretty bad. The rental rate is one per cent and we’ve fallen way behind on housing targets,” he said.
“Local hospitals have hundreds of vacancies, because workers can’t afford homes up there. We need to get people on the coast so they can live and work here.”

The latest figures show that development assessment times on the Central Coast are the highest out of the Central Coast-Hunter region, with 158 average assessment days.

The next highest is Lake Macquarie at 102 days, while the lowest is Maitland at 76 days.

Mr McKinna said much of the construction in the region now was approved when he was mayor.

“We need to streamline (development applications) and get things happening again,” he said.

TEAM CENTRAL COAST

Team Central Coast is community movement and a voice that encourages like-minded

independent candidates to become catalysts for change in regional governance. The Team Central Coast mission is simple and rooted in genuine consultation and collaboration with the community to achieve local outcomes that effectively address both current and future needs.

It is time for our region to come together, formulate a robust and inspiring vision, and

collaborate with all levels of government, business, and the community to ensure that the Central Coast remains an exceptional place to live, work, and thrive.
